Back when the internet was actually a fun place to be, I spent a few years building a large community of people who wanted to work with me to change the world. Before I fully realized what was happening, I was leading a group of nearly 20,000 members in 150 countries. Our collective work touched millions of lives, and even saved a few. It was really powerful.
And really, really hard.
When I couldn’t handle the stress anymore, I gave away or shut down all my projects. I left the communities. I deleted my email lists and social media accounts.
I took a few years off to rest and recuperate, which was well deserved. But then I took a few more off. And then a few more after that. And now I find myself here, a full decade later, wondering what ever happened to that guy who was on a mission to change the world.
That’s kind of a sad thought, but the beautiful thing about this life is that it’s never too late to work on becoming the best version of yourself. It’s true that I got hurt, I got cynical, and I got lazy . . . but it’s also true that my story doesn’t have to end there.
So today I want to give myself another chance.
I’m going to go back to the very beginning, back to the one little concept that started it all. Every Tuesday I’m going to come up with an idea to make a difference for someone in a small, personal, creative way, and then I’m going to send out that idea as a mission assignment to anyone who wants to receive it. Over the course of a week, we will all spend 10 minutes to accomplish it in our own way for the people in our own lives.
And this time I don’t care if 20,000 people end up joining the group, or just 20. I want to get a little better at being a human, so I’m doing this for me. I’ve been generous with my time and abilities, and I’ve also been selfish. The one thing I know for sure is that I like who I am a hell of a lot more when I’m generous, and I’m sure others do too.
So this is what I’m going to be working on for the foreseeable future. If you want to work on it yourself a little bit as well, I’d be happy to have your company along the way.
